What is a Herniated Disc?

And what can be done about it?

An intervertebral disc is the soft, shock-absorbing cushion located between the bones in your spine.

What’s often referred to as a slipped disc is more accurately described as a herniated or prolapsed disc. This occurs when the inner gel-like material of the disc (the nucleus) pushes through its tougher outer layer (the annulus), leading to herniation.

This condition can result in symptoms such as:

  • Pain in the back or neck
  • Sciatica or pain radiating down the arm
  • Tingling, pins and needles, or numbness
  • Difficulty with everyday activities like walking, sitting, or sleeping.

What Causes a Herniated or Prolapsed Disc?

Degeneration

Degeneration or wear and tear can happen in the spine as we get older, particularly in people with manual jobs.  This causes the discs in our spine to thin and dehydrate, making them more vulnerable to injury from normal everyday movements, bending or lifting.

Trauma

Injury to a disc in the spine is often caused by trauma, commonly in the form of heavy lifting. The force of lifting a heavy object can cause damage to the outer casing of the disc, resulting in a sudden shape change, also known as a bulging or slipped disc.

Genetics

There is some evidence to suggest that you can inherit a predisposition to develop back pain. You may be more likely to suffer a disc injury if your parents or siblings have also experienced a disc injury.

Need Something More For Your Pain?

You should consider Spinal Decompression if:

  • You have ongoing or chronic neck pain, back pain or sciatica associated with Spinal Stenosis.
  • You have been diagnosed with a slipped, prolapsed or herniated disc that is stopping you from living your life.
  • You have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and told that nothing can be done about it.
  • You are keen to avoid invasive spinal injections or surgery.
  • You are tired of the merry-go-round of appointments, painkillers and waiting times.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

A safe and gentle approach to back and neck pain, has helped 1000s of people in Canada break free from a cycle of painkillers and get back to normal life.

A Safe and Trusted Approach to Degenerative disc disease, Herniated and Prolapsed Disc.

Spinal Decompression is a successful and trusted non surgical treatment for back pain, neck pain and related problems such as sciatica.

It is particularly useful to sufferers of:

  • Bulging, herniated and degenerative discs.
  • Spinal Stenosis.
  • Sciatica or trapped nerves.
  • Pain that hasn't improved with other approaches such as spinal injections.
  • Cases of chronic pain ongoing for more than 6 weeks.

How Does Spinal Decompression Work?

Every day at Oakville Rehab Centre, we treat patients who struggle with the pain of a herniated disc, just like you.

Step 1 - Targeted Treatment

Spinal decompression specifically targets the area of your spine affected by a herniated disc, using advanced decompression technology for precise and focused relief.

The gentle decompression force is carefully calibrated to a proportion of your body weight, ensuring the treatment is customised to your unique needs.

Step 2 - Decompression

Decompression reduces pressure on the spinal segment affected by a herniated disc, while gently stretching the surrounding soft tissues to enhance spinal mobility.

This process can:

  • Relieve pain caused by muscle spasms
  • Alleviate nerve compression and irritation associated with herniated or prolapsed discs

Step 3 - Restore Pain-Free Movement

With each session, the decompression force is gradually and gently increased. This progressive treatment helps to relieve pressure on your spine, improve your range of motion, and restore mobility.

The goal is to help you return to the activities you enjoy, free from pain and restriction.

Is Spinal Decompression Painful?

Spinal decompression is generally a pain-free and gentle treatment. In fact, many patients find it so relaxing that they often fall asleep during their sessions.

The decompression force is carefully calibrated to a precise proportion of your body weight, making it tailored to your specific needs and unlikely to cause discomfort.

Additionally, the decompression force is gradually increased over the course of your treatment, based on your medical history and how well you respond, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments needed varies for each individual, but spinal decompression therapy typically takes place over a 6 to 8-week period. This allows your body the time it needs to adapt and gradually restore normal spinal function.

The exact number of sessions required will depend on your specific condition and how your body responds to the therapy.

Many patients experience pain relief early in the process, but it’s important to remember that long-term adjustments take time, especially for chronic conditions that have developed over an extended period.
